Following a break over Easter, Heathcote District Football League was back in action, where Letichville-Gunbower came up tantalisingly short in its first home game of the season against Huntly.
The match between the Hawks and Bombers was neck-and-neck from the jump with both sides kicking a pair of maximums in the opening quarter with Huntly taking a slim one-point lead at the first break.
L-G got the jump on the Hawks in the second quarter, while both sides kicked a goal apiece it was the Bombers who added a few extra behinds to snatch a four-point lead at half-time.
Following the major break, the Hawks bounced back strongly, kicking a bag of goals to fly back into the contest while limiting L-G to one more, the 17-point disparity now in favour of Huntly.
While L-G was able to mount a small fight back (2.1) and outscored the Hawks (1.2) down the stretch, it wasn’t enough to overcome the chasm the Hawks created in the third term, taking victory by a two-goal margin.
The final score was L-G 6.12 (48) to Huntly 9.6 (60).
The Bombers' wayward kicking cost them dearly, with Kyle Green (2) and Billy Hawken (2) managing more than one goal for L-G.
Meanwhile, Sam Dunstan was clinical for the Hawks, kicking four.
Matthew McLellan, Will Brereton, James Brereton, Bryce Barnstable, Jye Keath, Sam Keogh found themselves as part of L-G’s best.
The Bombers will hit the road again in round three and travel to face Mt Pleasant, which is looking particularly potent this season and remains unbeaten.
