The man behind the Mr Sheppy ice-cream truck, Dhami Singh, has donated to help flood-affected community members in Greater Shepparton recover.

The funds were raised at Shepparton’s Carols by Candlelight last year, with the $940 in profits presented to Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre on Monday, March 6.

Mr Singh said it was important to him that money raised locally went directly to flood-affected people in the local community.

“We all went through the floods and there was so much going around the community that the government relief was not that easy to get,” he said.

“Sometimes it’s better to just raise money locally and give local as well.”

MEAC office administrator Carol Lord said food and fuel vouchers were generally the most helpful forms of support.

“There’s still a real need for it because even though the floods have gone down, there’s still so many people displaced from their homes and looking for food, fuel to get places,” she said.

“We’ve still got a big demand here for people needing help.”

Parts of MEAC itself flooded and it also became an emergency relief centre during the floods.

“We’re still here doing what we always did, which is a community facility, and it’s a place where community can come — some people still just come and have a cup of tea,” Ms Lord said.

Mr Singh also took the truck along to the McIntosh Centre at the Shepparton Showgrounds during the floods as it became an evacuation centre, donating ice-creams to evacuees over a couple of days.
