For the first time, AFL Goulburn Murray is holding a dedicated under-14 girls’ competition.

The inaugural season began last week, the opening match taking place on Wednesday night, and the round concluding on Friday, with both games at Moama Recreation Reserve.

For this first season, the around 50 registered participants were divided into four teams — Purple, Pink, Black and Green — sorted by ability to create an even competition.

Teams of 12 play on condensed fields, the competition’s eight rounds to be played chiefly on Friday nights in Moama, with two rounds to be held in Kialla.

A grand final will be held in August alongside the women’s and girls’ deciders.

The league hopes as numbers grow, the competition will move to a club-based format and full-field games, perhaps as soon as 2026.
