An expected season of rebuilding has gotten off to a modest start for Mathoura.
The Timbercutters’ senior football side was dominated by Deni Rovers in the opening round of Picola District League at Mathoura on Saturday.
New coach Adam Bourke took charge for the first time with a changed group of Cutters, after the side lost a significant portion of the senior group over the off-season.
Deni Rovers proved too strong for Mathoura, scoring a comprehensive 27.18 (180) to 3.1 (19) win.
Mathoura was kept goalless in the first half, only sneaking a single point through the sticks.
While Wade Austin (two goals) and Corey Wanganeen put the Cutters on the board proper in the second half, the Rovers continued to pile on the points throughout the contest.
Ryan Lovegrove-Hudson had a day in front of goal, kicking 10 for Deni, while teammate Hayden Barker put through five of his own.
Things don’t get easier for the Cutters next weekend as the side takes on Berrigan away.
The Saints also logged a big win in round one over Rennie.
At the time of writing, the result in the A-grade netball between Mathoura and Deni Rovers was not available.
