In a face-off with one of its closest rivals, Picola United put Mathoura to the sword in round four of Picola District Football League action, running up a huge score in the senior football fixture.
The two clubs are at different stages of development this year, with Picola looking to push on after a finals appearance last season, while the loss of a large crop of players saw Mathoura enter a rebuilding phase, with a focus on youth and an eye to the future.
Those two situations were quickly evident in the match-up at Picola Recreation Reserve, as the host struck early and often to open up a huge lead within the first period.
Ten majors sailed through the sticks in the opening term as the Blues were up 63-1 by the first break.
It was a trend that continued throughout the game, as United continued to pile on scores, Mathoura’s lone consolation goal coming in the final term.
The final score had Picola a dominant 33.22 (220) to Mathoura’s 1.4 (10) victor.
There were plenty of goals to go around for the Blues, Blake Jorgensen leading the way with 10, while Cody Haub (8), and Jarrod Byrne (4) also came away with big hauls.
Fletcher Keen slotted the late score for the Cutters.
The strong margin moves the undefeated Picola United (3-0) into second place on the ladder.
Five teams remain undefeated, but it is Berrigan that leads the way as the only side to have played four games after prevailing in the lone fixture of the Easter weekend.
A home match-up with winless Blighty this weekend will have the Blues confident of continuing their strong opening run.
Five sides are without a win in 2025, but Mathoura languishes at the bottom of the ladder after three heavy defeats.
This week's assignment against champion Waaia is unlikely to provide any respite for the young Cutters.
