Zac Stovell and brother Khy were among Moama’s best in the win over Numurkah.

After a slow start to the 2025 Murray Football League season, the Magpies are flying high and now sit second on the ladder after overcoming Numurkah in round seven.

Travelling to Numurkah Showgrounds, Moama got stuck in early with plenty of chances in front of goal, but settled for 2.6 in the first quarter.

The Magpies were lock down on defence throughout the opening term, limiting Numurkah to one behind by the first break.

The Blues romped back into the contest in the second period, drilling five maximums to put the pressure back on Moama, but the visitors held on, kicking 3.3 to maintain a slim seven-point lead at half-time.

The third term was back to business for the Magpies, who once again got on top of the Blues, adding 4.3 to the tally, but the host refused to slink away, nailing 3.1 of its own.

Moama (1.3) faltered down the stretch, with Numurkah (2.4) turning up the intensity and went close to snatching victory from the visitor.

Luckily, the Magpies’ mental fortitude and grit was enough to keep the Blues at bay and walked away from round seven as eight-point victors.

The final score was Moama 10.15 (75) to Numurkah 10.7 (67).

Khy Stovell was named best-on-ground for the Magpies for his work in forward pocket, leading his side in goals (4).

He was joined by brother Zac Stovell, Lachlan Carmody, James Whitehead, Jye Warren and Thomas Naujok in the extended best-on list.

Moama’s next test will come in the form of Cobram, which comes off a beating at the hands of Congupna in round eight.
