Winning nine straight games is as good a preparation as Moama could hope for as it prepares for what could be a grand final preview.

The second-placed Magpies will be facing the undefeated reigning Murray Football League champion Congupna this week, but didn’t look past a competent Deniliquin side on Saturday.

The Rams have finals aspirations of their own and would have valued a prestigious scalp such as Moama’s, but the Magpies maintained their composure throughout the contest at Moama Recreation Reserve.

The Magpies started strongly, kicking four goals to two in the opening term to head into the break on the front foot.

Deniliquin didn’t go away in the second period and Moama was only able to extend its lead by a single point, the game remaining in the balance at half-time 7.8 (50) to 5.6 (36).

The Rams had their best passage of the game in the third and levelled the scores at 50, trailing by one on two other occasions during the period.

The margin was two at the final change, but it was Moama that showed its quality, kicking the last two of the game to break away for an 11.13 (79) to 9.8 (62) win.

Co-coach Liam Barrett led from the front with a team best four goals, matched on the opposition by the Rams’ Charlie Hillier.

This week's contest against The Road will be the Magpies’ toughest test of the season, and an assessment of where they stand in what could be the title fight this year.

Congupna has swept aside all challengers in 2025 after its thrilling grand final win to cap last season.

The Road is yet to concede more than 50 points in a game this season and hasn’t scored fewer than 95.

The champion has a ridiculous percentage of 509.22, Moama’s 177.47 the next best mark in the league.

The match-up will take place at Congupna Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
