Merrigum Bowls Club
October, 26
This week, we managed to win one game and lost the other two. Our midweek pennant team beat Murchison by 5 shots, Division four lost to Shepp Park by 67 shots and the Sixes lost to Avenel by 18 shots.
Al Dennis, Jim Arthur, John Lilford and Ross Pettifer played Wendy Thomson and won by 10 shots.
Merrigum began strongly and after the 13th end they led by 17 shots.
Their opponents regrouped and got to within 6 shots on the third last end. This was a good effort by the Merrigum boys, and it was great to see John Lilford playing again. John’s father, Jack, was a foundation member of Merrigum back in 1966.
Greg Pell, Stephen Dennis, Melanie Kumar and John Bailey met B Carlor and won by 3 shots.
Merrigum had a poor start, and it took them 12 ends to reach the lead where they were 3 shots in front.
As 3 shots was the winning margin, this meant that the last 9 ends were halved as both teams scored 8 shots.
This is a new combination, and it is pleasing to say that they all played a part in the win. Well done!
In the last game, Joe Chant, Peter Warburton, Christine O’Brien and Shelley Hughes drew B Lethlean and lost by 8 shots.
After 9 ends both teams had 11 shots on the scoreboard and on end 13 the scores were level once again.
The trend continued with level scores on end 15. However, that’s where the fan hit it; Murchison outscored Merrigum by 8 shots over the final 5 ends. Hard to give a reason why, so I won’t try.
On Saturday, we travelled to Shepparton Park and got a bowling lesson. After 7 ends, the Shepparton Park teams were already 41 shots in front.
This is not easy to explain, on paper I was quietly confident of putting up a good showing, but Shepp Park had quality players in every team, and it would be difficult to see anyone finishing in front of them at season’s end.
Greg Pell, Alan Dennis, Carmen Quattrocchi and Bob Pettifer played G Eastman and lost by 5 shots, so I can’t really include them in the overall performance as they gave their opponents a 7 shot start before they scored.
So, looking at these numbers, Merrigum won the last 14 ends by 2 shots. Unfortunately, they had a slow start. Still, it was a good effort. Well done boys!
Damien Parsons, Steve Dennis, Jennie Pell and Toby Parsons played R Kelley and lost by 9 shots.
As in the previous game, the Merrigum team was 15 shots down after 7 ends.
So, the figures indicate that Merrigum won the last 14 ends by 6 shots. Once again, you can’t give these teams a 15 shot start and expect to win.
Joe Chant, Neil Gardiner, Ross Pettifer and Liam Parsons played Mal Pretty and lost by 21 shots. They managed to win 8 ends, but all players were easily beaten by their opponents and as the scores indicate they were never in the hunt.
In the last game Peter Warburton, Barry McCrae, Glen Denham and John Bailey played N Gardan and lost by 33 shots. They only won 4 ends and as the results show they were completely outclassed.
Our sixes hosted Avenel and lost by 18 shots. New skipper, Tracey Clarke, Jenny Dennis, veteran Ken Phillips and David Bird played K Sinclair and won by 10 shots.
Tracey informed us all on our return to the Clubhouse that she was now going to retire undefeated.
This is a very pleasing result for all players, Tracey’s first game as skip, Jenny’s first game as manager, Ken has been off colour for a while but still managed to play the 21 ends and new player David Bird had his first win in only his second game.
It took them 12 ends to catch up with Avenel who jumped out of the blocks to set up a good lead.
In the last 9 ends, they gained 13 shots to Avenel’s 3 shots. Well done to all players!
In the final game David Francis, Shelley Hughes, Will McCrae and Mel Viney played D Rowley and lost by 28 shots.
They won six ends, but were not forceful enough to put more pressure on their opposition.
All four players are at the beginning of their bowling journey, and it is pleasing to see them all smiling and enjoying each other’s company after the game.
No long faces or big excuses, they have the right attitude; “It is a game to be enjoyed and while winning is very nice, it is the new people you meet and the social activity that really counts”.
Please keep in mind the first round of the championships is due to be finished in the very near future. It is up to both players to arrange the game and a marker.
You should also let Joe or Alan know, so the green will be ready for you.
Hamper donations are rolling in, and it is not too late to add your contribution, and by this time all players should have their book of tickets.
Please see Greg if you haven’t got a book.
November 2
We had two very different results this week. On Tuesday, we travelled down to Euroa and couldn’t win a single rink, and on Saturday we hosted Yea and won on four rinks and by a margin of 40 shots.
Euroa’s greens were in excellent condition, but this didn’t help us.
Barry Mc Crae, Jim Arthur, John Lilford and Chris O’Brien played K Kruse and lost by 11 shots.
They won 8 ends but at certain stages were as much as 11 shots down but never gave up.
Greg Pell, Steve Dennis, David Francis and John Bailey were matched against M Steen and lost by 16 shots.
They began well and after end seven they led by a single shot. Disaster struck on the next end when they dropped 6 shots.
After that point, they only managed to score 4 singles, while their opponents added 16 shots. It was a great start but a poor finish.
In the last game Joe Chant, Neil Gardiner and David Bird played Marg Moore and lost by 20 shots.
After 3 ends they led by 5 shots, but the burden of having to give their opponents two free bowls every end soon told, and they gradually fell a long way behind.
Apparently, there was some miscommunication between the missing player and the selectors. Enough said on this matter.
On Saturday, we hosted Yea and had a much more pleasing result.
Damien Parsons, Steve Dennis, Jennie Pell and John Lilford played T McInnis and won by 17 shots.
They began in a brilliant fashion and after five ends they led by 14 shots. Although only three shots separated the two teams over the last 16 ends, the early damage was well and truly done.
This was a great team effort with a mixture of beginning bowlers and returning bowlers.
Skipper Damien had a forceful game and his team combined very well. Other rinks may gain something from the way they encourage each other and are not walking around the greens to see their friends while their team is playing.
Peter Warburton, Glen Denham, Barry Mc Crae and John Bailey played M Barrot and won by 10 shots.
After three ends they led by 8 shots, after 13 ends they led by 10 shots, and after 15 ends the margin was 13 shots in favour of Merrigum.
Yea did better in the remaining ends but couldn’t bridge the gap. Well done!
Greg Pell, Alan Dennis, Carmen Quattrocchi and Ross Pettifer met W Martin and won by 8 shots.
They started well and led by 6 shots in the early ends, but by end 7 they found themselves a shot down.
After this little hiccup, they went on the attack and by end 13 they had a 9 shot advantage.
Yea won the last eight ends by a single shot, but the mid-game effort from the Merrigum boys ensured they got the points.
In the last game, Joe Chant, Jim Arthur, David Francis and Graeme Hubble played Neil Rieschieck and scraped in by 5 shots.
The Merrigum combination began well and was in front on every one of the 21 ends.
The only blimp on their radar was end 13 where they dropped five shots, but this did not take away their lead.
The game was played in a good, friendly manner, and it is pleasing to see Yea players enjoying their game despite having to travel every second week.
This week, our sixes had a forfeit from Shepparton Golf.
The Club events are proceeding well and the new Match Committee of Barry McCrae Steve Dennis and Kellie Parsons can be pleased with their efforts.
Merrigum Golf Club
October 25
Merrigum golfers played the monthly Privilege Cup round on Saturday, with Tash and Ronnie putting in significant effort setting the course up for a Halloween themed “Spooky Golf”.
There were skeletons strategically placed to come back to life just as players hit or laugh at the misadventures they caused.
Gary Eden got into the spirit of the day, winning best dressed, coming dressed as a skeleton.
Luckily, he didn’t keel over during the round because the chance of successful resuscitation looked improbable.
Andrew Wood certainly wasn’t lying down, easily winning the day with the best score returned in a long time at Merrigum, 75-11-64.
There were a number of good scores on Saturday, and a few golfers would have been thinking they were in with a chance, only to have their hopes quashed by Woody’s outstanding round.
He will sacrifice almost two shots to the handicapper for his great round, however.
A countback was required to determine the runner-up, with both Craig Doherty and Alan Fabris having what would have been a winning score on most days over the winter period.
Craig got the nod for his 85-18-67 and better back nine, while Alan scored 87-20-67.
Both of those players have shown some good form recently.
Woody capped off a great day by winning nearest-the-pin on the sixth, as well as the chook shed challenge with 12 points.
Other nearest-the-pins went to Bernie McGrath on the ninth, Cory Berghofer on the jackpot twelfth, and Alan Fabris on the fourteenth.
Thanks to Tash and Ronnie for their work setting up a fun day and organising many of the prizes, and to captain Ash for introducing something a little different for Saturday’s and future Privilege Cup winners.
There were excellent numbers for last Thursday’s twilight competition, and isn’t Woody having a great week.
He won twilight with a round of 41-6-35 to go with his Saturday winnings. Geoff Kirk was the runner-up with 41-5.5-35.5.
Kirky also won least putts with 13, while nearest the pins went to Simon Doherty on the jackpot ninth and James Bray on the fourteenth. The two point cut was 40.
This Saturday’s event is 4BBB stroke, the first round of the summer fourball. On Tuesday, November 4 there will be a Melbourne Cup Day stableford event.
November, 1
The first round of the summer fourball was played at Merrigum on Saturday, another perfect day for golf.
The event was 4BBB stroke and it continued last week’s run of low scores; if you weren’t well down in the 50’s with your nett score, you were not in the hunt for maximum points to get the summer fourball underway.
There are another four rounds to play, with the best four of five rounds counting towards the overall score.
A countback was required to separate the winners and runners-up after two pairs finished on 57 nett, with each pair containing a bandit and a reliable back-up to help them reach the outstanding score.
The winners with an eight under par 26 on the back nine where they started were James Bray and Simon Doherty, with Simon looking like he might have been superfluous after James got on the card for the first five holes, but then Simon came to life and almost made it back to level terms as far as featuring on the card.
If James had his putter working the score could have been several shots better, which is a frightening thought.
The runners-up were Jodie Mulcahy and Craig Doherty who started with an even more impressive ten under par 26 on the front nine, before following up with 31 on the back nine.
Again, Jodie did much of the damage by featuring on the card ten times, and it should be noted that both she and James lost 3.5 shots from their respective handicaps.
The next best pair was Alan Fabris and Bruce Brown with 59 nett, however they did win the chook shed challenge with 13 nett on the four holes.
nearest-the-pins were won by James Campbell on the ninth with his second-last shot of the day, John Fuller on the jackpot twelfth, and Tony Borrelli on the fourteenth.
Tommy Ladhams bounced back to form in last Thursday’s twilight event, winning with a score of 41-5.5-35.5.
Bill Bray was the runner-up with 42-5.5-36.5. Craig Doherty took the jackpot for nearest-the-pin on the ninth, while Bruce Brown won the least putts with 15 on a countback from Bill Bray. The two point cut was 38.5.
Next Saturday’s event is stableford. The following Saturday, November 15, is an 18 hole three-person ambrose, not as cross-country as normal, sponsored by Techie’s Tyres who has been on board as a club sponsor for a number of years now.
This promises to be a great day, and teams can be men, women or mixed.
Hit-off will be slightly later than usual, between noon and 1pm to accommodate the sponsor's availability, so get your teams organised for that day.

We thank and appreciate the generous sponsorship of “Kyabram Showcase Jewellers” for the Stroke Event held on Tuesday, October 28 where a field of 37 women participated.
This week it was Ina Hogeboom who with her score of 75-21-54 net grabbed the top spot in A-grade followed by Barb Duke, whom after some recent top performances has now jumped from B into A-grade to be named runner-up with 77-21-56 net.
Mary Elliott was the winner in B-grade carding 77-22-55 net while Pam spokes with her score of 77-28-56 net was a runner-up.
Julie Bowman although her handicap is quickly reducing still continues to show up in the winning circle, claiming the C-grade title again with 89-36-53 net with Kathy Fanning as runner-up on 85-31-54 after a c/b from Helen Caldwell and Sue Reid both on the same net score of 54.
The following received a ball each for their effort – Sue Reid 54, Helen Caldwell 54, Nola Arnold 57, Denise Hee 58, Trudie Plumb 58 and Lyn Eels 58 after a c/b from three others.
Terry Thompson won nearest-the-pin on the first, with Denise Hee winning the jackpot on the fourteenth with her second shot.

They finished with a net 50.87 while runner-up were Phil Plumb and Andy Kalmokow.
Campbell Patterson and Chris Harmer were third with a net 52.50. Fourth were Geoff Berry and Ray Falla on a net 52.37.
Ball winners were Peter Fraser and Roger Gillon, Vin Sleeth and David Kuiper, Luca Campanelli and Andrew Phillips.

Kyvalley View Bowls
Midweek Pennant,
Bev Lyon skipped for Marilyn West, Nance Saunders and Julie Neale against J Tamburini and her team.
Rochester opened up a small lead of 7-3 after seven ends but the Valley View team drew level picking up 4 shots on the eighth end, to level the match at 7 all, with some very consistent bowling the Valley View girls picked up two fours and a five and won 8 of the remaining 13 ends to claim a great win 31-16.
Helen Emery skipped for Marlene Topp, Kerri Savva and Helen Ward against H Wilson and his team.
The two teams had a very close game, with all but one end in the first fourteen ends only one shot wins.
The score after the fourteenth and was 9/6 in Valley View's favour, but Rochester won 6 of the remaining 7 ends and 13 shots to 1 to go on and win the match 19/10.
The overall result was a very exciting win to Valley View 41 to 25. Yay, Well done.
Next week we play Moama Steamers at home. Good bowling.
Weekend Pennant
Rod Donohue’s rink of Bob Greenaway, Frank Findlay and Alf Soden found the rink of S Felmingham from Lockington very tough to score against.
After winning the first end with 3 shots, they were unable to get on the scorecard again until the seventeenth end with another 3 shots and a final 2 on the last.
Lockington won 18 ends with the win 28/8.
Peter Lyon skipped for Marilyn West, Nance Saunders and Helen Ward against C Felmingham and her rink.
The Lockington team bowled very consistently and on the tenth end had a lead of 20/3.
The Valley View team picked up a four on the next and trailed 8/22 on the thirteenth end.
With some more consistent bowling from the Valley View team, they picked up five of the remaining eight ends to go down by ten shots. 25/15.
Graeme Topp again playing with one player short skipped for Dave Clavell and Kevin Broadhurst against D Gilmore’s team.
Graeme’s team picked up 6 ends for 10 shots, to Lockingtons 15 ends for 30 shots. Lockington won the match 30/10 and overall by 83/33.
Next week’s match is at home against Kyabram. Good bowling.
Kyvalley View Golf
Men
The recent upward trend in scoring continued in Saturday’s Stableford event as our golfers tuned up for the upcoming Club Championships in the first Round of the summer Cup.
After a slow start with just one point from his first two holes, fifteen handicappers, Pete Mangan went on a scoring spree, dropping putts from all parts as he put together a round of 43 points.
That number gave Mango a three shot win from Mick Gallivan who took home the runner’s up trophy with a round of 40 points.
Lawrie Casey and Pooch McHale finished a further shot back as they led the list of ball comp winners.
Alan Hausler took out B-grade with the second-best score of the day, 42 points, as he too recorded a three shot win with Paul Pappin the runner-up with 39 points.
Brendan Cornwall finished next best 38 points and picked up a ball in the ball comp as did Daryl Harrison with 37 points, Brett Radley (36), Peter Sherman (36), Jeff Carnie (36) and Rory (36).
The ladies’ field was led home by Lynne Canavan who scored a decisive win with 39 points, four shots clear of the runner-up in Helen Emery with 35 points.
One of the highlights of Lynne’s round was a near ace on the par three 15th as her ball pulled up just centimetres short of the cup, in a shot that netted her a birdie and the voucher.
Other nearest-the-pin winners on the day were Kevin Bauerle and Brendan Cornwall on the 3rd, John Canavan (B-grade 12th ) and Nat McAuliffe on the 3rd.
David Collins and Pooch McHale picked up the balls for the nearest second shot on the ninth and 13th holes, respectively.
On Tuesday, Gordon Mackay and Paul Pappin took out A and B-grades respectively, both posting scores of 38 points.
Mick Gallivan picked up the first of two A-grade runner’s up trophies for the week with 36 points, while club Captain Gavon Armstrong was the B-grade runner-up with 37 points.
The results sheet provided is devoid of other trophy winners though taking a stab at it, I would think that potential ball winners were Kelly Cheong, Kevin Bauerle, Stuart Newton (all with 35 points) and Pooch McHale, Ron Dixon, Jeff Carnie and Laurie Radley who each had 34 points.
This week marks the first round of the club championships (incorporating the November Monthly Medal) which will be played over November 815 and 22.
Despite not playing much golf of late, five-time champion Ash Kuiper is expected to be in the thick of things again but should face strong challenges from the likes of Daryl Harrison, Mick McAuliffe, Miles Gould and maybe even Paul Newman.
In B-grade I expect the likes of Alan Hausler, David Collins, Gavon Armstong, Geoff Strachan (if available) and Ron Dixon to be in contention going into the final round.
There will be two tee times for the first two rounds being 8am assembly and 11.30am assembly, while the final round will be an 11.30am assembly for a noon hit off.
Women’s
High scores were again recorded in last Wednesday’s Stableford round at Valley View.
Wendy cox continued her good form, winning A-grade with 40 points.
Tracey Wade was runner-up with 37 points on a count back from Jan McHale, who was nearest-the-pin.

The 4Ball Aggregate Stableford event was won by Vicki Shipp and Trish Williams from Rich River, with a combined total of 78 points.
Finishing one point back on 77 points, Leesa Barnes and Terri Giffen from Parkland were runners-up.
nearest-the-pins went to Tracey Wade from Valley View in A-grade, Renae Boucher from Neanger Park ( Bendigo) in B-grade and Ros Wright from Shepparton in C-grade.
In pennant last week, our Valley View/Mooroopna team enjoyed a convincing 4/1 win over Rich River.

Phil Denham’s team struck an opposition skipper who was up into the head moving bowls around and taking bowls out of the head.
They lost 19 shots to 34. After eight ends, they were 1 shot to 19 down.
Phil and his team were determined to improve on this, and on the 17th end the score was 17 shots to 26.
But, they were unable to maintain this over the final four ends.

The scores were tied again, 12 shots all on the thirteen end and 17 shots all on the eighteenth end.
Winning 3 shots on the 20th end was enough to win the game.
Murray Tenace’s team lost 18 shots to 21.
A slow start saw them down 2 shots to 8 after the first nine ends.
Winning the next two ends tied the score 8 shots all.
Echuca rallied and led 16 shots to 9 after 15 ends and 14 shots to 21 after 19 ends.
Winning the last two ends saw Murray was not enough, and they lost by 3 shots.
