The improved 2025 edition of Echuca United wasn’t able to stand up to the reigning Murray Football League champion Congupna, the Eagles relegated to a heavy defeat in round five.

The Road were clinical in attack in their visit to Echuca South Recreation Reserve, kicking 24 majors throughout the match, including getting the early jump with five goals to one in the opening term.

United had bright moments as Liam Gundry, Anthony McMahon, and Ryan Stobaus slotted goals throughout the match, but Congupna’s attack continued to fire over the remaining three quarters.

The Road would lead by 61 points at the half after kicking six more goals in the second, and would add 13 additional goals in the second half for a final score of 24.16 (160) to 3.6 (24).

James Boyer and Thomas McCluskey were the scoring leaders for The Road, kicking four majors each.

After a 2-0 start, Echuca United have dropped three games straight, albeit against quality opposition, the league’s current top three sides.

The seventh-placed Eagles will attempt to arrest the slide against fellow mid-tablers Deniliquin on May 17, after sitting out next week as part of a split round for the league.

The match will be held at Hardinge Street Oval, Deniliquin.
