In what was set to be an evenly matched Murray Netball League match between Echuca United and Deniliquin delivered on its promise with the round six battle going down-to-the-wire.
The Eagles travelled to Hardinge St Oval to face the Rams, who are currently in the finals picture, while Echuca United is on the outside looking in.
Despite this, the Eagles took the lead in the first quarter of the contest, with the visitors finding the back of the net nine times, while the Rams were hot on their heels with eight.
Both sides outplayed themselves in the second period, with Echuca United adding 10 more goals to its tally, but it was Deniliquin that pushed hardest, goaling 12 times to snatch a single-goal lead at the major break.
As the Rams continued to put in a solid performance following half-time, the Eagles plateaued slightly, scoring on seven occasions to increase the gap by three with the final frame to go.
Echuca United put in a strong fourth quarter to performance to get close to retaking the lead in the dying moments, but the Rams did enough to eke ahead, claiming a four-goal victory by the full-time siren.
The final score was Echuca United 38 to Deniliquin 42.
The Eagles will look to round seven to get back in the winner’s column, but will be in for a tough match against Nathalia, which currently sits in second with one loss this season.
