The second annual George Day Cup basketball competition was held at the Deniliquin Stadium on Friday, November 21, bringing together teams from the district’s four primary schools Deni South, Deni North, Edward, and St Michael’s.
Named in honour of prominent local basketballer and educator George Day, the tournament continues to grow in popularity.
“It’s a privilege; a pretty good honour (to have the event named after me),” Mr Day said.
“It’s great to see the schools involved, and so many skilled kids. It’s good to see basketball on the increase.”
The format of the competition ensured both boys’ and girls’ games contributed to the overall result, with points awarded for winning each half and each game.
While students of all ages were eligible to play, most schools fielded teams from Years 5 and 6.
After a spirited day of competition, St Michael’s School emerged as the overall winner, taking home the George Day Cup.
Organisers extended special thanks to Deni High School students, who volunteered their time to umpire the matches, ensuring the smooth running of the event.
