Opportunity awaits with Fire + Rescue NSW

Responsibilities are varied with Fire + Rescue NSW.

Deniliquin’s Fire + Rescue NSW brigade is actively recruiting to bolster its ranks.

The role of an on-call firefighter is varied, beyond responding to and attending fires.

You could be attending a structure fire one day, then an animal rescue or assisting ambulance the next.

It’s considered to be a rewarding job, allowing you to help others during emergencies and stressful situations.

Regional South 3 recruitment officer Hannah Ham said on-call firefighters are a diverse group of people who balance other work, study and family commitments, but enjoy being part of a team and working with people and other emergency services.

Applications are accepted from all community members and are assessed on merit and physical aptitude.

“We need on-call firefighters to help protect our community. It is a great way to give back,” she said.

“I urge anyone thinking about joining to apply.

“It's a great way to expand your skill-set, to broaden your horizons and to be a part of something big and meaningful.

“Everything is paid, and there are leave entitlements too.”

Deputy Captain Ham, who is attached to the Finley FRNSW brigade, said she joined during a recruitment drive and has enjoyed her position as a firefighter.

“The captain at the time was asking around, looking for people, I just thought gee that sounds like fun .... and, here I am.

“I like challenging myself, and becoming a firefighter sounded just like my kind of crazy.

“The camaraderie is really special.

“You get a great sense of reward from doing something important.”
