Murray River Council recently held the first meeting of its Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee.

The committee includes representatives from the community, council and local disability service providers Community Living & Respite Services and Vivid.

The group will provide ongoing advice and recommendations to help ensure council’s planning, projects and services encompass the rights and needs of people with disabilities.

Murray River Council Mayor John Harvie says the committee will be an asset to council.

Murray River Council Mayor John Harvie said the committee would support the execution of council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

“The DIAP offers a series of recommendations to help council identify and address barriers for people with disabilities,” he said.

“It covers areas such as accessible infrastructure, employment opportunities and community engagement, so it’s great to have the committee up and running to help us with its implementation.”

The committee’s first meeting focused on setting its agenda for the year ahead, including issues such as improving access to infrastructure, grant funding, workplace adjustments and strengthening community engagement strategies.

The committee will meet on a bi-monthly basis.
