Locals shine in state athletics

Connor Wilson won two events at the Secondary Athletics Championship.

Five students from Deniliquin High School proudly represented their school at the NSW Combined High Schools Secondary Athletics Championship, held Wednesday to Friday last week.

Among the standout performers was Connor Wilson, who dominated the field in both shot put and discus for the 16-year boys category.

He placed first in the state for both events.

His discus throw reached an impressive 42.18m, further cementing his reputation as the reigning under-16s Australian shot put champion.

In the younger age groups, Year 7 students Christopher Dixon and Ollie Dellwo competed in the 12-year boys discus, placing 16th and 11th respectively.

Year 8’s Emma Wettenhall took on the 400m and high jump in the 14-year girls division, finishing 17th in the sprint and achieving a strong 6th place in high jump.

Senior student Willow Lake also made her mark, placing 5th in shot put in the 17+ girls category.

Deniliquin High School external sports coordinator, Tom Edwards, praised the students for their efforts and sportsmanship.

“It’s great that they’ve gone and represented our school and gotten those results,” he said.
