In a “big moment for the rainbow community”, Greater Shepparton City Council has formalised an action plan for the LGBTIQA+ advisory committee.
The committee started in August 2021 under interim terms of reference.
After a review in 2022, agreed to by the committee, the updated terms were adopted by council at Tuesday’s August meeting.
In partnership with the committee, an inaugural action plan was developed with three priority areas: advice, celebration and advocacy, and inclusion and connection.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali acknowledged the work of Cr Fern Summer in leading the way to have the committee established.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Cr Summer was appointed as the councillor representative and chair of the committee.
She said committee members would be able to voice concerns where previously they may not have felt empowered to.
“It’s extremely exciting,” she said.
“We now have a tangible outcome of an inaugural committee that’s going to create some amazing outcomes moving forward.”
Cr Seema Abdullah moved the motion and thanked community members and organisations for their advocacy.
“I will be interested to hear the committee’s thoughts on how to progress some of the very sensitive issues this community is facing,” she said.
“I also want to ensure the LGBTIQA+ community’s safety, health and wellbeing is our priority.”
Key tasks of the plan in 2022/23 include investigating visible and public demonstrations of pride, such as a flagpole for the Rainbow Flag, increased awareness and support for LGBTIQA+ days and events, and investigating a formal partnership with council and local support groups.
The action plan will be reviewed every three years.
