Greater Shepparton City Council has introduced a new application process for community requests to install memorial plaques.

The council has previously considered requests to place plaques in honour of a community member on council assets, usually in gardens, on a case-by-case basis.

The civil recognition policy has been updated to provide a consistent approach for considering the requests and was adopted by council at the August meeting.

The criteria for the applications includes consideration of significant community contributions by the recipient of at least 30 years.

It would include proven service and dedication towards community programs, volunteer organisations, fundraising activities, mentoring, coaching or fostering roles.

The council also included for community organisations to be considered for milestone achievement awards, previously awarded to individuals and organisations only.

The policy will be reviewed in two years.
