Top genetics pay dividends

Womboota Border Leicester Stud will offer 80 rams at its annual sale on September 25.

Womboota Border Leicester Stud is celebrating high prices for its ewes and lambs, as the business prepares for its annual ram sale.

The stud recently sold 134 first-cross ewes with lambs at foot for $535 per head.

Owner Malcolm Starritt said this outstanding sale result represented more than just good market timing — it was validation of 111 years of focused breeding for commercial profitability.

“The numbers speak for themselves,” said Mr Starritt, whose family has been breeding Border Leicesters since 1914.

“When first-cross ewes with lambs at foot are making $535, you’re looking at a significant profit advantage for producers using our genetics.”

As a founding member of Superborders, Womboota Border Leicesters breeds rams that consistently rank above breed average on the BLX Index, the industry’s key measure for first cross production profitability.

Mr Starritt said the upcoming Womboota Pastoral Ram Sale on Thursday, September 25, presented farmers with an opportunity to access the genetics behind the $535 ewe sale result.

He said with 80 premium rams and 15 select ewes on offer, buyers can choose from genetics proven to deliver higher first-cross ewe values, superior lambing percentages, faster growth rates, better muscling characteristics and improved wool quality in crossbred progeny.

“We’re not just selling rams,” Mr Starritt said.

“We’re providing a complete production system that allows our clients to brand and market premium progeny year after year.”

With Australian sheep markets experiencing record strength and tight supply conditions, Mr Starritt said the timing couldn’t be better for producers to invest in superior genetics.

He said the $535 ewe sale demonstrates the market’s appetite for quality maternal genetics.

“This market rewards producers who can offer branded, traceable, high-performance breeding stock.

“Our sheep genetics give clients that competitive edge. Good genetics make money while you sleep.

“With results like our recent $535 ewe sale, that investment in superior Border Leicester genetics pays dividends year after year.”

The Womboota Pastoral Ram Sale will be held on Thursday, September 25, at 544 Edgar Rd, Womboota, NSW. Inspections are available from 10am, with the sale starting at 1pm.
