An event to mark Vesak Day, a time of celebration and prayer for Buddhists worldwide and within the Shepparton community, was held at Queen’s Gardens on Saturday, May 10 .
About 70 to 75 guests attended, including City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali, Deputy Mayor Anthony Brophy, Cr Fern Summer and Cr Rod Schubert.
Also in attendance were council chief executive Fiona Le Gassick, Victoria Police Shepparton Inspector Bruce Simpson, Imam Hysni Merja of the Albanian Mosque, and prominent general physician Dr Nihal Nanayakkara.
Buddhist Association Group president Sam Atukorala said he was pleased with this year’s reception.
“This year’s Vesak Day celebration in Shepparton was a truly memorable occasion, marking the 10th year of the event with warmth, reverence and strong community spirit,” he said.
“The reception was overwhelmingly positive, with participation from local leaders, dignitaries and community members from diverse backgrounds.
“What pleased me most was seeing people from all walks of life come together in a shared moment of peace, reflection and cultural appreciation.
“The lighting of candles and lanterns, symbolic of wisdom and compassion, was particularly moving and served as a beautiful reminder of the values that unite us all.
“The event not only honoured Buddhist traditions but also highlighted the inclusiveness and harmony that define our multicultural region.“
