The Murray League’s top football side flexed its muscles on Saturday.

Congupna has been a dominant force in 2024 and Tongala couldn’t go with The Road in their round 10 fixture at Tongala Recreation Reserve, falling 6.7 (43) to 17.13 (115).

The Blues kept The Road in reach throughout the first quarter, and while they could only manage two behinds for the period, the league leaders only put up 2.4 in response.

However, Congupna got rolling in the second, a six-goal-to-one term putting them firmly in the driver’s seat.

Tongala fought back in the third period, winning it four goals to three, but The Road reeled off six majors in the fourth to seal the match.

Kyle Mueller’s seven goals did most of the damage for The Road, while Jak Trewin was an able supporting act with five majors.

For Tongala, Matthew Caia was the only player to pick up multiple goals (two), while Sam Cipriani, Andrew Hummerston, Jessie Johnstone and Jordan Souter each added one.

Souter was best-on-ground for the Blues on a tough day out, while Alex Williams, Brayden Nevett, Caia, Hudson Kellett and Tristan Watson also put in commendable performances.

The Blues (4-6) are in the midst of a four-game losing slide and, after flirting with the top four, have now fallen into ninth place on the league table.

The opportunity to rebound presents itself against Deni Rams (5-5) next weekend when the Blues visit Hardinge Street Oval.
