Shepparton North capitalises as Lemnos and Murchison split points in a weather-affected SDTA round
Round three of the Shepparton District Tennis Association’s Division 1 competition saw only one game completed as inclement weather gripped the region, particularly out at McEwen Reserve Tennis Courts.
Lemnos found itself in a strong position against Murchison, leading 4-24 to 0-10 on the back of strong 6–2 wins to the combinations of Peter Jeffrey and Will Kop alongside Sonal Shah and Jennifer Smith.
A dominant 6-1 win by Jennifer Smith and Julie McLelland delivered the decisive blow that left Lemnos in prime position to notch back-to-back wins, but the weather gods smote any chance to nab full points, with the clash labelled a washout after four rubbers.
That left the door open for an enterprising Shepparton North in its clash against McEwen Reserve Gold.
Clark Pettigrew teamed with Dean Pritchett (6-1) and Gary Harvey (6-5) to claim the opening two sets, while a commanding 6-0 result for Louise Dwyer and Alex Harvey propelled Shepparton North to a comfortable lead.
Christine Wright and Kylie Reither stole a set back for Gold, but another pair of 6–1 results ensured that Shepp would not be caught with only six rubbers completed due to the weather.
The match eclipsed the minimum number of sets completed to constitute a game, and a 5-33 to 1-14 victory saw Shepparton North rise to the top of the ladder, two points clear of Lemnos.
Their next opponent is Murchison, while McEwen Reserve Red will take on the in-form Lemnos in round four.
