Murray Bombers downed in grand final rematch

Reigning premier Echuca has failed to overcome Euroa in a rematch of the 2023 Goulburn Valley League A-grade grand final, going down by 19 goals at Euroa’s Memorial Oval courts.

The Murray Bombers were out to redeem a poor start to the season, having entered Saturday’s clash with a 1-2 record and still reeling from a 42-goal drubbing at the hands of Mooroopna in round three.

Welcoming back coach Belinda Lees for just her second match of the season, as well as 2023 premiership players Lauren Jones and Greta Pearson who both missed last week, Echuca regained some important experience as it looked to arrest the early season slide.

But it proved no match for Euroa, with the Magpies putting the foot down from the start.

Echuca trailed 14-5 at the end of the first term, although it was able to stem the bleeding somewhat in the second, winning the quarter by a goal to reduce the margin to eight at half-time.

The third term saw Euroa truly get on top, however, with the Magpies stretching the margin to double digits as they entered the final quarter with a 14-goal lead, which they again extended to the final margin of 19 by the time the final whistle was blown.

Echuca, which sits eighth at the conclusion of round four with just one win and three losses to its name, will face Rochester next week at home as it looks to regain some of its sparkling 2023 form.
