Despite celebrating its past players premiership reunion day, Lockington-Bamawm United couldn’t get the win against Elmore, losing in a back-and-forth contest in round seven of Heathcote District League football.
The Cats got off to a flier at Lockington Recreation Reserve, nailing 4.4 in the first quarter to take the lead at the first break.
Yet, Elmore hung around, drilling a trio of maximums to trail by eight points heading into the second quarter.
However, LBU was all over the visitor in the second period, producing a huge 6.3 effort in the lead up to half-time, while holding the Bloods to 2.1.
With the disparity 34 at the major break, it shaped up to be a party at Lockington Recreation Reserve.
Elmore had other ideas.
The Bloods countered hard in the third term, piling on 4.4 to get themselves back into the contest, with the Cats struggling in front of goal, producing 2.1.
As is the case with most LBU games, it all came down to the final frame, with the host still holding a 19-point lead, but Elmore looked threatening.
Unfortunately for the Cats, they laid an egg down the stretch, producing 1.1 in the fourth quarter.
It wasn’t enough to stop the Bloods.
A 5.3 effort in the clutch was enough for Elmore to not only come back, but steal the victory away from the Cats and spoil their afternoon.
The final score was LBU 13.9 (87) to Elmore 14.10 (94).
Matthew Butler (6) was outstanding in front of goal for the Cats in the loss, earning himself selection among LBU’s best.
He was joined by Tyler Phillips, Bowden Stone, Jack O’Callaghan, Cody Betts and Lochlan Basham.
LBU won’t get much of a reprieve as it looks ahead to an uphill battle on the road against league leader North Bendigo in round eight.
