Bombers storm back to blow Cats away

Despite trailing at quarter-time, Leitchville-Gunbower rallied against Lockington-Bamawm United in round six of Heathcote District Football League.

Travelling to Leitchville Recreation Reserve, the Cats got their day under way in emphatic style, nailing five majors in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the Bombers were still in the mix, bagging three maximums of their own along with two behinds, the deficit was 10 at the first break.

Following a blistering start, LBU faltered in the second period and was unable to add to its score through the quarter, while the Bombers capitalised on the opportunity, tallying another three-goal effort to snatch a 12-point half-time lead.

The third term was a gritty affair, with both sides struggling to get any momentum on the attacking end, kicking one goal each and a sprinkling of behinds to make the Cats’ deficit 14 with a quarter to play.

Once again, LBU disappeared from the contest down the stretch, with the side unable to tick the scoreboard at all in the fourth quarter and was run over the top of by the Bombers, who dropped 7.4 on their rival’s head to run away with the game.

The final score was L-G 14.13 (97) to LBU 6.1 (37).

Tom Brereton led the way in front of goal for the Bombers, collecting a bag of majors, while nine other players got in on the action with a goal.

Meanwhile, usual suspects Thomas Leech and Jack Reiter both kicked a pair of goals for the Cats.

The win continues L-G’s steady return to form after slumping following the first round, with the side now holding firm in the finals picture in fifth position.

For the Cats, its the second time this season they have led by double digits at quarter-time and went on to lose the game, limiting their ability to climb up the ladder into finals contention.

The Bombers will get a well-timed rest in round seven, while the Cats’ next fixture will be against Elmore, as both sides look to climb up the standings in round seven.

North Bendigo v Colbinabbin

In a top-of-the-table clash, Colbinabbin suffered its first defeat of 2025, North Bendigo distinguishing itself as the only undefeated side in the league.

After a tight first period, the second quarter proved defining as the Bulldogs cashed in for seven goals to the Grasshoppers’ two.

Colbo had plenty of pressure in the third, but wasn’t able to convert in front of goal, kicking 3.5 to narrowly lose the period against North Bendigo’s 4.0.

The Hoppers restored some respectability in the last, kicking five majors to two, but the lead was too great to overcome.

North Bendigo took the clash 15.12 (102) to 11.14 (80).

Colbo shared the scoring around as Alex Carr, Isaac Carracher, Brandyn Grenfell and Jude Ryan kicked two goals each.

White Hills v Mt Pleasant

The Mighty Mounts sit in the top two after dispatching White Hills by 20 points.

Mt Pleasant did the majority of its work in the opening quarter, surging to a 32-7 lead in the first term.

The Demons crept a little closer in the second, but were still well in arrears and a cagey second half saw the half-time margin remain intact at the full time siren.

Mt Pleasant got the win 13.9 (87) to 10.7 (67).

Mitchell Bennett kicked four majors to lead the Mighty Mounts’ scoring efforts.

The reigning premier Demons have been a shell of their former selves this season, yet to notch a win in five attempts.

Elmore v Heathcote

Elmore did what was needed to keep Heathcote winless, prevailing 12.15 (87) to 11.12 (78) at home.

The Saints had a tenuous half-time lead that slowly evaporated throughout the second half, the Bloods surging with eight goals to five after the main break.

James Harney led Elmore with three goals, while Rhys Holmberg and Matthew O’Dwyer provided solid support with two each.

Round seven

Colbinabbin hosts White Hills, while Huntly will return from the bye to travel to Mt Pleasant.

Lockington-Bamawm United will celebrate the successes of 1983 with a reunion at Lockington Recreation Reserve, the club taking on Elmore.

North Bendigo will travel to Heathcote, while Leitchville-Gunbower has the bye.
