Virtual fences on menu

Jami Thompson, Hayley Symonds, Brett Finlay, Steph Brisbane and Jason Collins enjoyed this year’s IDW breakfast.

The annual Dairy Industry Leaders Breakfast welcomed 35 farmers and industry representatives to hear an update on the development and successful use of virtual fencing on dairy farms.

Australian Dairy Farmers president Ben Bennett introduced guest speakers to discuss the practicalities of using a virtual fence and explain the technical details of neck halters designed to vibrate gently when a cow either met or passed over a boundary set by a farmer.

Use of the technology’s app was projected onto a screen to show the ease of the system’s use.

Virtual fences were launched in Tasmania in 2023 but remain banned in Victoria under current animal cruelty legislation.
