Trekking tractors arrive in Deni

Deniliquin Collectors Club members Daryl Whateley and Neil Buckley with Charlie Bartolo from the Sydney Antique Machinery Club.

Tractor owners and enthusiasts from across the country have converged on Deniliquin this weekend for the National Historical Machinery Association’s National Tractor Convention.

Starting today, the Deniliquin Collectors Club will host the event at Memorial Park over three days.

While the event itself is for NHMA members only, Deniliquin Collectors Club secretary Daryl Whateley said there will be a bit of a spectacle for the community.

All 80 tractors will be involved in tractor treks today and tomorrow.

Travelling in groups of 20, they will make their way through Deniliquin before taking off-the-highway routes to their destinations in either Mathoura or Blighty.

“Two treks will go north, meeting for lunch at the Blighty Hotel, overlapping and then completing the circle back to Memorial Park,” Mr Whateley said.

“Two treks will go south, meeting for lunch at Moama, overlapping and circling back to Memorial Park. Each group with then do the other route on the following day.

“On Sunday there will be a shorter trek through the forest adjacent to Memorial Park for all participants, returning for lunch and a farewell.”

Sydney Antique Machinery Club member Charlie Bartolo arrived in Deniliqun earlier this week ahead of the convention.

He’s brought his John Deere 1120 with him.

“I purchased it in October last year, in four pieces,” he said.

“I had to put in a solid two months of work to have it ready for Deniliquin because my other one - which has a fully enclosed and airconditioned cab - is too heavy for the truck.”

The weekend’s schedule will also include the NHMA annual general meeting.
