A ‘flat’ ending to speedy police chase

What started with an allegedly stolen vehicle ensued into a hectic police chase across Mooroopna and Shepparton.

Just before noon on Wednesday, February 21, police received reports of a black Holden Calais being driven erratically on the Peter Ross-Edwards Causeway.

Not long after, police located the vehicle in a restaurant car park in Mooroopna.

Here, police officers attempted to approach the male driver and female passenger.

The driver then reversed, allegedly hit the front of the police vehicle behind it, and then allegedly collided with a stationary vehicle in the car park.

An officer was in the police car at the time but was uninjured, and the passenger inside the stationary vehicle was a man in his 90s from Quarry Hills who suffered minor injuries.

Following this, the female passenger of the Holden, a 37-year-old from Collingwood, left the car and was promptly arrested by police, which led the driver of the vehicle to take off.

Four police cars then followed the Holden to St Georges Rd, Shepparton, where tyre deflation devices were deployed, stopping the vehicle northbound of the roundabout on St Georges Rd coming off Hayes St.

Traffic was closed off northbound from that roundabout for at least an hour just before 1pm.

Officers forced entry into the vehicle, where the driver, a 31-year-old male from Richmond, was arrested.

Both driver and passenger are currently assisting police with inquiries.
