Shepp Show back with a bang

Jessica Hocking, 3, from Euroa rides in the saddle for the very first time at the Shepparton Show. Her pony was Milo who’s been working the show circuit for 10 years. Milo is the second most experienced pony — his contemporary Millie has been doing it 20 years. Also pictured is Walker Baker, who was managing several attractions on the Friday morning. “We are really understaffed at the moment,” Mr Baker said. “People are saying they’ll work but they don’t show up.” Mr Baker’s mother looks after the Wild West Pony Ranch attraction and has worked with ponies her whole life. The long-awaited return of the Shepparton Show was a tale of two very different days.

Friday was a slow and wet affair, which didn’t attract any significant crowd numbers until 5pm.

Saturday was a different beast as animals piled in for judging and families loaded up the pram as the overcast weather cleared into a sunny, mild day and there were plenty of weekend sticky-beakers out to grab some hot chips.

This year kids aged under 14 got in free, thanks to a government COVID-19 recovery grant.

Schools took advantage of this free entry on Friday, running field trips out to the showgrounds.

Balloon side show attendees Cristian Zumaeta, Enrique Vera Kike and Karen Cowell. The trio had been working all Friday morning and by noon only three people had stopped to play the balloon game. “We’re waiting for 4 to 5pm,” Mr Zumaeta said. “People will start coming then.” Ms Cowell said she travelled all year doing this work, and staffing was very tight right now. “People just don’t want to work,” she said. “We’re mainly here on the balloon game, but we’ve also got the duck game and another ride.” Photo by Daneka Hill
