Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed is hoping bringing Commonwealth Games Delivery Minister Jacinta Allan to Shepparton will convince the Victorian Government to make the city a hub.
Shepparton was snubbed when the four regional hubs for the 2026 Commonwealth Games were announced.
Ms Sheed said in Victorian Parliament she wanted Ms Allan to see Shepparton’s facilities, to show off their suitability to host cycling and BMX events as part of the event.
“I’m sure once the minister visits our facilities, she will see for herself how well suited Shepparton would be for the Commonwealth Games bicycle events,” Ms Sheed said.
“Shepparton was disappointed to learn that our district was not selected as a major hub to host the Commonwealth Games, as we are in a prime location, and we could have used this opportunity to further develop and expand our sporting facilities to the world-class standard ahead of the Games.
“We want to ensure we are in the running to hold some sporting events such as road cycling, BMX racing and BMX freestyle.”
Ms Sheed said there was also an opportunity to develop cultural events and sites, and that the city was well placed to host major events.
“As well as our unique facilities and stunning landscape, we have an abundance of accommodation opportunities in Shepparton and its surrounding towns,” she said.
“The events would not only bring a welcome financial boost to our region following two tough economic years, but it would uplift our community and offer a new event that people can enjoy together and feel like we are part of the Commonwealth Games.”
