Two separate fires in the Southern Riverina region are now being investigated by police.

In the first, a planned burn at Savernake escaped on to a neighbouring property Wednesday last week and burned two sheds and their contents.

In the second, an abandoned car was found fully engulfed on Mickles Rd, Finley on Friday.

NSW Rural Fire Service Federation Group Captain Greyd’n Davis said the Savernake fire was initially reported as an escaped burn last Tuesday.

Thought to be extinguished, it reignited in last Wednesday’s strong winds.

It burned about 100ha before getting into the two sheds on the neighbouring property.

Grp Capt Davis siad the sheds continained furniture, household items, trucks and other machinery which were all affected by the flames.

“We had eight tankers from the Savernake and surrounding brigades, and about 40 firefighters on the scene,” Grp Capt Davis said.

“The fire was believed to have been extinguished, but the wind blew it up on Wednesday.”

Grp Capt Davis said there was no record of the fire being registered with the fire authorities or the neighbours, as is legislated.

All burns must be registered via www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify/.

The car fire in Finley was reported about 9.20am Friday, on Mickles Rd, near Crosby Rd.

Firefighters form the Berrigan and Finley Rural Fire Service attended, as well as Finley’s NSW Fire + Rescue brigade.

Authorities say there is a chance the abandoned car may have been stolen.
