Rushworth remembers and reflects

Lest we forget: Rushworth drew big numbers for its dawn and morning services.

Hundreds gathered in Rushworth for the town’s Anzac Day services.

Before the sun began to rise, a big crowd formed at the war memorial in High St for the dawn service.

The service started at 6am with Ewan Mclean reciting a poem about the Anzac horses.

The dawn service also featured Ramon Rathjen, who played the bagpipes, while Rhonda Risstrom sang the national anthem.

The early morning culminated in a breakfast spread of bacon and eggs put on by the SES.

Reflecting: The Anzac Day dawn service remembered the Light Horsemen.

Rushworth RSL president Bill Barlo said the turnout was in the hundreds.

“The crowd at the dawn service was excellent,” he said.

“We were very pleased with how it all went.”

At 10am, crowds returned to High St for the morning service.

The morning service started with a march through the main street, with many community members sharing stories and memories of those who had served.

Rushworth resident Ryland McNamara, 12, spoke at the service about his ancestors from Rushworth who served in World War I, while at the dawn service, John Gribben spoke about some of the happier moments that came from the wars.

“It was an excellent turnout with lots of children,” Mr Barlo said.

“The crowds seem to be getting bigger every year.”
