Protect yourself this flu season

Get vaccinated: Stay up to date on your COVID-19 and flu boosters.

The Goulburn Valley Public Health Unit is reminding the community to get vaccinated ahead of this year’s flu and winter virus season.

As COVID-19, influenza and other respiratory illnesses continue to pose a risk in the community, the GVPHU is reminding the community about the importance of getting your vaccinations to protect not only yourself, but protect those around you.

GVPHU physician Dr Will Cross said now was the time to book in for your flu shot and your COVID-19 booster, with both being able to be done at the same time.

“The flu shot is free for people aged 65 and over, people who are pregnant, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, children aged six months to five years, and people with medical conditions that put them at increased risk of severe flu,” he said.

“If you’re worried about your symptoms or need more information on vaccinations, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.”

In addition to vaccination, the GVPHU wants to encourage people to continue to practice preventative and protective measures against respiratory infections to keep the community safe.

People should continue to wear masks in crowded places, hospitals or aged care facilities, and you should also increase ventilation by opening doors and windows, or meeting outside where possible.

If you feel cold- or flu-like symptoms, you should stay home and use a rapid antigen test. If you test positive for COVID-19, you should isolate for five days or until symptoms clear. If you test negative but still have cold- or flu-like symptoms, you should stay home until you are well.

You can book your flu or COVID-19 booster today by contacting your local pharmacy or GP for more information.
