A cheddar cheese made from milk from a Victorian dairy farm is the organic industry’s best new product.

The 400g Organic Milk Co Organic Cheddar Block beat an organic waffle mix and certified organic fertiliser to claim best new product at the Australian Organic Industry Awards late last year

This win comes just three years after ACM began manufacturing Organic Milk Co products at its factory in Girgarre, in northern Victoria.

Organic Milk Co general manager Ryan Reynolds said national recognition proved “what we are doing is resonating with consumers”.

“Organic cheddar cheese is a new cheese segment and we’ve been able to create award-winning cheese through the hard work and dedication of our dairy farm suppliers and manufacturing team,” Ryan said.

Helene and Jake Perry are third generation dairy farmers at nearby Rushworth and their 150-cow family dairy operation supplies milk to make the organic cheddar.

“To win a national award, it makes me a little bit proud to feel we are doing something worthwhile and our milk is made into a good product,” Helene said.

“With all of the cell count monitoring and regulations we must abide by — to make sure we are producing quality milk — we know that the final products are high quality.”

Stocked in supermarkets, the Organic Milk Co Organic Cheddar Block was developed by a team of skilled and experienced cheesemakers at Girgarre with milk sourced from 28 certified organic dairy farms.

As for organic cheddar serving suggestions — Helene has a favourite that’s sure to tempt many.

“Fresh cheese on a cracker is delicious. With a gherkin or olive.”
