Pantry now open two days a week

Jonathan Cox and Sandra Whyborn set up the Community Food Pantry before opening on Wednesday afternoon.

The Community Food Pantry at the Deniliquin Salvation Army Hall is trialling a change in operating hours.

Opening on Thursdays only since being launched last year by the Salvos and the Rotary Club of Deniliquin, organisers have now chosen to offer a Wednesday afternoon shopping slot as well.

Deniliquin Salvation Army community engagement worker Sandra Whyborn said while Thursday opening hours have been reduced to accommodate the change, she said it would provide another option for people to utilise the service.

“The pantry is now open from 2pm to 3pm Wednesdays, and 10am to noon on Thursdays,” Ms Whyborn said.

“The pantry has been open for six months now, and we’re averaging 20 shoppers per week.

“We want to make it clear that this service is open to anyone who needs it.

“You might be from a low income family, or you might just be finding it hard on any given week due to the cost of living pressures. Anyone can come in.”

You must pre-register with the volunteers to access the pantry, which can be done on the day.

Non-perishable grocery items and toiletries are available from the pantry for a lower cost than at the supermarkets.

All money received is used to restock the pantry, with donations of items also appreciated.
