News in brief

Scrutiny: The future of Kirwan’s Bridge will be determined after engineers report on the condition of its structure.

Learn how to assess risk at events

Greater Shepparton City Council will hold a free risk-assessment workshop on Tuesday, September 27 for event organisers.

Risk assessments are needed for any event held on council land and in council buildings.

Council’s Risk Department will be co-ordinating the workshop, giving community members the opportunity to learn and ask questions from experts in the field.

Council’s Anthony Nicolaci said the sessions would cover essential information, such as how to start the assessment process, identifying potential risks and completing a successful assessment.

The session will be held from 6pm to 7pm in the council boardroom, 90 Welsford St, Shepparton. Registrations are essential. RSVP before Monday, September 26 to events@shepparton.vic.gov.au

Kirwan’s Bridge structure to be tested

Strathbogie Shire Council has out a tender for specialised professional engineers to complete a structural investigation of Kirwan’s Bridge.

Council allocated $100,000 in its 2022/23 budget for the investigation, which will look at the bridge’s condition, and help council decide on its future.

During the past year, the 10-member Kirwan’s Bridge Community Panel has looked at various options, including keeping the 132-year-old heritage bridge as the main crossing or reserving it for cyclists and pedestrians and installing a separate vehicle bridge over the Goulburn River.

Due to the current three-tonne limit set on the bridge, reconstruction works to Weir Rd, Kirwan’s Bridge, will begin soon, weather permitting, which will provide a suitable alternative route for heavy vehicles.
