The upgraded Welsford and Fryers Sts intersection in Shepparton will reopen at 6pm on Thursday, March 9, with motorists to experience changes to traffic flow after four months of works.
An extra right-turning lane has been added from Welsford St into Fryers St, and motorists will no longer be able to turn right from Marungi St on to Fryers St or vice versa.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said the works would help ease queuing of vehicles, improve traffic flow and provide safer driving.
“The community now has a much safer road for everyone to use,” he said.
“The extra right-turning lane from Welsford St into Fryers St will provide a quicker route westward and the removal of the right turns will prevent the queuing that used to occur as traffic tried to get on to the causeway.
“The full depth reconstruction of the road will cater for increased vehicle traffic volumes as Shepparton grows along a north-south corridor.”
Cr Sali thanked the community for its patience while the works were carried out.
The works for the fourth stage of a six-stage plan to improve traffic flow on Welsford St began on November 14 last year, with the contract awarded to Apex Earthworks.
This stage of the project cost $2.89 million, with half funded by the Federal Government under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
The final two stages will upgrade Welsford St from north of High St to the Wyndham St and Sobraon St intersection.
