The City of Greater Shepparton has committed more than $1.4 million to purchase new wheelie bins.

The contract is for works associated with the manufacture and supply of kerbside collection bins for glass-only bins and food organics and garden organics, or FOGO, bins that are required under the Victorian Government’s waste collection reforms.

Greater Shepparton City Council’s tender included the supply of 27,500 purple-lid bins, spare bins, 2000 purple lids and 3100 green-lid FOGO bins.

Only two submissions were received, neither from within the municipality, and at council’s monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 17, councillors resolved to issue the contract to Mastec Australia Pty Ltd.

“When you consider how many bins we’ve got to purchase, 27-and-a-half-thousand purple-lid bins will be delivered, 500 purple-lid bins, spare bins as well, that we need and you’ve got green-lid bins, over 3000 as well, so a significant amount,” Mayor Shane Sali said after the meeting.

“A one-off expense.”

Kerbside collection frequency changes are being rolled out in Greater Shepparton over two weeks from October 16.

The green-lid bin (food and garden organics) will now be collected weekly, and the red-lid bin (landfill waste) and yellow-lid bin (recycling) will be collected on alternating fortnights. The day a bin is collected will not change.

The changes are to encourage the correct sorting of waste to reduce the amount sent to landfill and help achieve the Victorian Government’s 2030 waste diversion goals.
