One person has died and another is in hospital after a collision near Girgarre on Thursday morning.

Police said a car and a van collided at the corner of McEwen and Winter Rds just east of Girgarre at 8am on Thursday.

The male driver of the van, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene, while Ambulance Victoria said a woman in her 20s was taken to hospital in Echuca with abrasions.

Police said her injuries were non-life threatening.

Echuca police Sergeant Russell Locke said only two people were involved in the crash, and it appeared one of the vehicles had failed to give way at a give way sign.

It was the 21st life lost on the region’s roads since New Year’s Eve 2022.

A serious collision was recorded at the same intersection in June 2022.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash on Thursday are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing, with police appealing for information.
