Preparation for the fire season has started in earnest, with the anual StartUp Day exercises at Mayrung completed by firefighters from six Rural Fire Service brigades.
Members of the Myrtle Park, Tuppal, Pine Lea, Birganbigil, Mayrung and the Mid Murray Support Brigade came together on Sunday.
They took part in a range of training exercises in preparation for the summer months, organised by Group Captains Keith McAllister and Lawry Smits, and Mayrung Captain Gordon Ball.
“The emphasis was on the importance of teamwork and communication between the brigades,” Mayrung brigade secretary Phyllis Ball said.
“A highlight of the day was the attendance by two members of Deniliquin Rescue Squad - VRA Rescue NSW, who demonstrated their equipment and skills in rescuing victims from a car crash scenario.
“They also showed RFS volunteers how fire brigade equipment can be improvised as a resource for first responders to a vehicle accident.
“It was a valuable exercise to illustrate cooperation between the VRA and volunteer fire fighters.
“Participants appreciated the generosity of a local landholder for supplying a vehicle to be used for demonstration purposes.”
New equipment at the RFS members’ disposal were also showcased on the day.
“The Support Brigade brought out the new bulk water tanker which will be used for the rapid refilling of fire trucks on the fire ground, and also the very new tilt recovery truck.
“The organisers appreciated the participation of the three Support Brigade members in the day’s activities.”
In the Mid Murray Zone - which covers Edward River Council, Murray River Council and parts of Murrumbidgee Council - the Bush Fire Danger Period begins on October 1.
