A 3.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Elmore on the morning of Tuesday, November 5.

At 6.41am a seismic event was felt around Elmore and Goornong, confirmed by Fosterville Gold Mine to be a mine-induced seismic event.

Forty-seven felt reports were recorded by Geoscience Australia.

“FGM are currently reviewing the event, and we will publish further details once they have been confirmed,” a representative for Fosterville Gold Mine said on its website.

A mine-induced seismic event is caused by change of pressure and stress on the rock being mined, sometimes leading to rock fractures and causing ground vibration.

Forsterville Gold Mine has a fact sheet on its website explaining the causes and frequency of mine-induced seismic activity, available via tinyurl.com/fgmfactsheet
