Community members came together Monday this week, to launch local NAIDOC Week celebrations in style.

Murray River Police District hosted the traditional flag raising ceremony at Deniliquin Police Station.

Local Aboriginal organisations, local service providers, Edward River Council councillors, other emergency services personnel, members of the general public and Murrumbidgee Local Health District staff and volunteers were all present.

Guests were greeted with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, and following some short speeches the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags were raised together.

Monday’s event concluded with a shared barbecue lunch.

The NAIDOC Week activities continued with the Deniliquin Local Aboriginal Lands Council’s NAIDOC Koori Market in the Deniliquin CBD yesterday.

More on that event will be included in Friday’s edition.
