Cold weather is coming for northern Victoria and the southern Riverina this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting frost for Wednesday, May 29, with the temperature expected to dip below zero in the morning.

This will be followed by a partly cloudy day on Thursday, May 30, with a very high chance of rain, most likely in the afternoon and evening.

Light winds will tend north-easterly with speeds between 25 and 35km/h during the morning then tending northerly during the day.

On Friday, May 31 it will be another partly cloudy day with the forecast of a very high chance of showers, most likely in the morning.

On Saturday, the first day of winter, a maximum temperature of about 14°C is forecast.
