The Christ Church Anglican Echuca celebrated it’s 160th anniversary since the church first opened in Echuca.
The celebration was held on Sunday, September 7, the exact date the first ever service was held 160 years ago, on September 7, 1865.
The congregation were joined by other guests to mark the special occasion with a service led by the Bishop of Bendigo, Matt Brain, and Reverend Phil Zamagias.
The service was made even more special as three parishioners completed their sacrament of confirmation, an act where baptised members can affirm their devotion to God as adults.
Before the service ended, Rev Zamagias also took the chance to recognise two parishioners, Ron Wood and Barry Kelly, for their dedicated service to the church.
Rev Zamagias said the service was a successful celebration, especially for the individuals who were confirmed and recognised.
“It was a very happy and joyful celebration for all those who were there,” he said.
“Particularly for the families and friends of those who were confirmed and, of course, the long-term Echuca residents who have been coming to Christ Church for decades.
“It was very special for them to celebrate the 160th and to share it with their friends.”
Once the service was done, guests gathered in the foyer to enjoy a light lunch and tea together.
A cake cutting was held during the afternoon tea, with Bishop Brain being given the honours of cutting the specially made anniversary cake.
Rev Zamagias and his wife Leanne also unveiled a wine barrel that featured a plaque commemorating the 160th milestone.
Rev Zamagias said they were grateful to be part of the church’s story and hoped it continued on into the future.
“We’re just grateful that the church has been there so long,” he said.
“We are now responsible for making sure it’s handed on for future generations.”
The church currently holds two services each Sunday, an 8.30am traditional communion service and a second service at 10.30am.
Throughout the week, the church is home to a wide range of activities, including Bible studies, a singing group and an op-shop.
