Celebrating our birthday at the races

Pastoral Times front cover

The Deniliquin Pastoral Times is celebrating its birthday and its commitment to the community in style this year.

In our 165th year of proudly bringing you local news and sport, we’ve increased the support given annually to the Deniliquin Racing Club to sponsor one of the races on Anzac Day.

The Deniliquin Pastoral Times 165th Anniversary Maiden Plate 1400m will be race five on Thursday.

Pastoral Times general manager Leesa Muir said this is just the start of how your local newspaper will celebrate its milestone with you this year.

“The Pastoral Times has had a long association with the Deniliquin Racing Club, as a sponsor and in promotion of its events,” she said.

“Our journalists have also enjoyed capturing the race day moments for our news and sports pages, and our staff have been enthusiastic patrons of the race days and members of the club.

“With our official birthday in May, we considered the Anzac Day Races to be a great opportunity to enhance this partnership while also highlighting the longevity of this newspaper in the community.

“We look forward to celebrating our milestone with the community in a number of ways this year, with more details on our other plans to be revealed soon.”

The Deniliquin Anzac Day Races will be held at the Deniliquin Racecourse on Thursday.

The first race is scheduled for 1.25pm, allowing patrons to attend Anzac Day services before heading out to the track.

The feature event will be the $16,000 White Lion Hotel-Motel Diggers Cup.

As well as quality racing there will be lots of additional entertainment.

Fashions on the Field, sponsored by Murray Constructions, is always a popular inclusion at local race meetings, and this one will be no exception.

For football fans, the big Anzac Day AFL clash between Collingwood and Essendon will be broadcast on the big screen.

There will be full TAB facilities, plus local and metropolitan bookmakers.

The two-up tradition will also continue on course after the last race.

Memberships of Deniliquin Racing Club are available for $60, which provide entry to the Anzac Day and Caulfield Cup Day meetings, plus entry into a $500 draw on Caulfield Cup Day.

Memberships will be available on the day at the gate, via the Racing Club Facebook page or Eventbrite.

Anyone wishing to take advantage of the Peppercorn Party Paddock and private marquee packages must pre-book on Eventbrite, where general admission tickets are also available.
