Brave customer thwarts alleged attempted petrol station robbery

Arrest: A customer thwarted an alleged attempted armed robbery at a Shepparton service station.

A man holding an iron bar allegedly demanded money from a petrol station customer in the early hours of Monday, April 29.

Shepparton Crime Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Andrew Costello said a service station customer was allegedly confronted by the man at the Liberty Service Station in Benalla Rd, Shepparton.

The customer had filled their vehicle with fuel and paid for it about 1.30am.

When they returned to their car, they were allegedly confronted by a man with a metal bar who demanded his wallet and his money, Det Sen Constable Costello said.

The victim overpowered the man, and the man ran off empty-handed.

On Wednesday police arrested a 22-year-old Shepparton man and charged him with attempted armed robbery, assault with a weapon and assault.

Police allege the man was on bail at the time for other matters.

The man has been remanded in custody to appear in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court.
