Bird-watchers and nature enthusiasts, keep your eyes peeled.

A remarkable feathered friend is making its way into the region, and it’s not one to be missed.

The double-barred finch, a charming little bird adorned with grey and white plumage and two signature black bands across its chest, has been spotted in the Shepparton area, extending its range westward from the Warby Ranges.

Previously a rarity north of the Murray River, this finch’s recent appearance, including sightings near Dookie and Pine Lodge, has sparked excitement among local bird-watchers.

Don Roberts, president of BirdLife Murray Goulburn, emphasises that the double-barred finch is easy to identify and unlikely to be confused with other small finches, often found in pairs or small groups feeding on grass seeds.

Locals lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the double-barred finch are urged to report the sighting to BirdLife Murray Goulburn to aid in their vital conservation efforts.
