Western Star is celebrating its 100th birthday, marking a major milestone for one of Australia’s favourite butter brands and reflecting on how it has remained part of Australian kitchens across generations.
Born in Victoria's Western Districts in 1926, Western Star has grown from its regional beginnings into one of Australia's most recognised dairy brands.
Western Star is the number one chilled spreads brand in Australia, with a pack purchased every second and products purchased by nearly 1 in 2 Australian households each year.
Its continued success is built on a reputation of consistency and care that have made it a staple in Australian kitchens for decades.
The centenary is an opportunity to highlight the craftsmanship, dedication, and people that have helped the brand endure across generations.
Proudly Australian made in Cobden, Victoria, the brand continues to be shaped by local farmers and butter makers.
Managing director, Lactalis-Mainland Dairy Oceania, David Breckenridge said reaching 100 years is a proud milestone for a brand that has continued to earn its place in Australian kitchens.
“Very few brands have the privilege of being part of Australian households for 100 years,” Mr Breckenridge says.
“Western Star has built that trust through generations of craftsmanship, consistency, and the expertise that goes into every block and tub.
“As we mark this milestone, we’re proud of the legacy behind the brand and are focused on ensuring it continues to be loved by future generations.”
Throughout its history, commitment to quality continues to be recognised, with Western Star being named Australian Champion Butter eight times, and receiving multiple gold medals at both the 2026 Victorian and Australian Dairy Industry Association Awards, including the trophy for highest scoring consumer pack butter.
Group marketing manager for Lactalis-Mainland Dairy Laura Blewitt, said the brand’s multigenerational appeal comes from understanding what Western Star means to Australian consumers today.
"Western Star has remained part of Australian kitchens because it continues to play a meaningful role in everyday cooking and baking," Ms Blewitt says.
"While food habits have changed over the decades, Australian’s continue to value quality ingredients they can trust. That’s why Western Star remains a familiar part of everyday cooking and baking today.”
