A gun has been fired at Australia's busiest airport as police arrest a man in one of the domestic terminals.

Australian Federal Police said the police gun was fired before the man was arrested on Wednesday morning at Sydney Airport.

There were no injuries and no ongoing threat to the public, the AFP said.

A crime scene has been set up as an investigation continues.

Police had taped off an area near gate 53 of the T2 domestic terminal as part of the investigation.

The terminal is mainly used by Virgin and Jetstar, with some Rex flights also using the terminal.

Charges have not yet been laid.

The airport is operating normally, Sydney Airport said in a statement.

Sydney is Australia's busiest airport, handling more than 40 million passengers a year, according to data from the federal transport department.
