A man has died in police custody despite officers tasering him in an attempt to stop him self-harming.

Northern Territory Police officers attached to the Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team executed a search warrant about 7am on Friday at the 62-year-old man's home south of Darwin.

About an hour later police deployed a taser in an attempt to prevent the man  harming himself.

An officer injured a hand trying to disarm the man, NT Police said.

The man's wife was present.

Officers provided first aid and paramedics treated the man but he died at the scene.

A crime scene has been declared and the street closed.

Investigations continue and the incident is being treated as a death in custody.
