A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a stabbing incident in Melbourne's west that killed a 16-year-old Melton South boy.

Police confirmed charges were laid against the youth from Hillside on Wednesday, more than one week after the Sunshine incident which led to the death of Pa Sawm Lyhym.

The 17 year old is expected to appear in Melbourne Children's Court on Wednesday and an investigation is ongoing.

Police had previously urged the youth to turn himself in, alleging he's a "significant player" in the incident.

Lyhym was fatally stabbed at Sunshine bus station on May 18.
