Australia will have its first national cybersecurity coordinator who will be responsible for fighting cyber hacks and threats.
Air Vice-Marshal Darren Goldie has been appointed to the role after a four-month search for potential candidates.
He will have the backing of a national office for cyber security within the home affairs department.
The senior commander joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1993 and has held several distinguished roles.
This includes a stint in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet where he provided strategic foreign policy advice.
He is currently responsible for preparing Australia's air combat forces.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil announced the appointment on Friday.
"Strengthening Australia's cyber security is a fundamental priority for my government," Mr Albanese said.
"It underpins the way that we live, the way that we work, and the way that we communicate."
